Home Maintenance: Tips for Dusted & De-Cluttered Living Spaces

Home Maintenance

In our ongoing home maintenance series, we’ve been focused on the “3 D’s”: deep cleaning, dusting, and de-cluttering. We would love to hear from you! There are always stories . . . from the long-lost beloved items people find to the freedom and happiness they discover cleaning out neglected shelves. We are your “home enjoyment” cheerleaders and want you to save time and money on your home, whether you intend to enjoy it for a long time to come, or whether you are considering an upcoming moving.

Living Rooms and Dens.

Tackle shelves and curios today. Again, we recommend a methodical approach, where you have boxes ready to receive items you plan to throw away or donate. If you want to sell items on an auction site like eBay, know what you’re doing and schedule time to handle the sales, or have an eBay-selling specialist with you when you go through things. A knowledgeable person will be able to tell you what has value or can sell, or be able to find out quickly. Don’t waste months wondering if you should sell something, only to have more time slip by.

Lampshades, Ceiling Fans, Lighting Fixtures.

In addition to dusting and deep cleaning books and decorative artifacts, take the time to wash lights and fixtures. Your home maintenance list should include vacuuming lampshades, and replace old, worn out ones. Remove and wash glass and other light coverings, plastic and wooden fan blades. With the exception of blown- or cut glass, many light fixtures and covers can be run directly through the dishwasher! Dust light bulbs.

Other Décor Home Maintenance: Plants and Furniture.

Use this opportunity to dust plants, alive or fake. Dust on real plants’ leaves can make them droop or even die, as it interferes with their ability to photosynthesize. All you need is a slightly damp cloth. We recommend that you have a bucket of lukewarm water nearby so that you can rinse out your cloth regularly; you would be amazed at the amount of dust that accumulates on plant leaves. Cleaning silk plants is a little trickier and the process does not involve water. Wipe windowsills while you’re at it.
