Moving typical pets—dogs, cats, hamsters, turtles, etc.—isn’t that difficult, especially if you’re moving within the same county or state. Common sense and love for your pet will inform your actions, but here are additional tips on moving other types of pets—regardless of distance.

  • TIP #1: Check destination county or state’s regulations, vaccination requirements, or ownership restrictions before moving. (See U.S. Department of Agriculture.)
  • TIP #2: Moving Companies will not move live animals

CAR/MOVING VAN: It’s best to keep your pet with to ensure its well being. Before moving, familiarize the animal with car travel, especially if it will be crated. The pet might be best kept offsite while the truck is being loaded to reduce anxiety and the chance of running away. Dogs and cats may lose their appetites during a move; don’t be alarmed. These simple preparatory actions will reduce stress.

Provide plenty of water and ventilation. Temperatures normal for you are good for your pets. Fresh air and exercise stops along the way if it’s a long drive are going to be necessary.

  • TIP #3: Ensure overnight accommodations allow pets.

Snakes, turtles, birds, fish: Hydration is key, as are moderate temperatures. Put damp cloths in snake and turtle cages, with a stabilized water source. If you must put turtles where you cannot reach them during the move, secure them loosely but securely in burlap or breathable sacking surrounded in packing popcorn. Turtles and snakes should be double boxed, poked with air holes. Label all animal boxes “LIVE ANIMAL” and “THIS SIDE UP.”

Birds are calmed by a cage drape. Remove potentially harmful toys. Fish: Obtain appropriate aquatic packing supplies from a dealer, bagging fish separately. Don’t feed 24-48 hours prior to moving to avoid soiling water. A dealer can provide more sophisticated moving options for highly sensitive or expensive fish.

AIRPLANE: For information about moving pets by air, visit Delta Airlines:  Three options are: shipping, checking as cargo, or carrying on. Service fees and restrictions apply. Reservations are required with all airlines: the number of animals per flight is restricted.
