Visit the Vet Before You Move

This is also a good time to get copies of your pet’s medical records, prescriptions, and a recommendation for a new vet near your new home.

Flying with Pets

If you’re moving by plane, check airline policies for pet travel well in advance. Some allow small pets in the cabin, while larger pets may need to travel in cargo. A comfortable and well-ventilated pet carrier is essential to a comfortable trip. The size matters: your pet should be able to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably. Also make sure to check the airline’s approved carrier dimensions for both the cabin and cargo. Lastly, make sure to help your pet get used to the carrier so that they know it’s a safe space. You can do this by letting them spend time inside with treats, toys, and blankets, prior to flying. 

Driving Cross-Country with Pets

If you’re hitting the road, plan for frequent stops—dogs especially need potty breaks and time to stretch. Try to stop every 2-3 hours at a pet-friendly rest areas. Keep your pet in a well-ventilated, secure carrier or use a pet seatbelt for safety. Bring plenty of water, food, and their favorite blanket or toy to keep them calm. Never leave them alone in the car, especially in extreme temperatures. 

Settling Into Your New Home

Once you arrive, give your pet time to adjust. Set up a familiar space with their bed, food, and toys right away. Stick to their usual feeding and walking schedule to help them feel more at home. If you’re moving to a new state, start looking for a local vet as soon as possible in case of emergencies.
