Moving Cross Country: What to Pack for a Long Drive

Moving Cross Country

So, you’re moving cross country. The movers have all your furniture, and it’s time for your long drive to get to your new home. Whether you’re driving solo or with family, spending hours (or days) on the road can be exhausting. A little preparation goes a long way in making the journey smoother and more enjoyable.

After a few too many road trips filled with forgotten chargers, empty stomachs, and stiff legs, I’ve learned the hard way what to pack to make the journey as smooth as possible. So, before you hit the road, here’s what you’ll want to have in your car.

Snacks & Drinks

There’s nothing worse than being hangry on the road—especially when the only food options are overpriced gas station chips. Pack a mix of healthy and fun snacks, like trial mix, granola bars, and, let’s be honest, a few guilty-pleasure treats. A cooler with cold drinks and fruit will also save you from relying on convenience stores every few hours. And don’t forget a reusable water bottle—you’ll want to stay hydrated.

Comfort Items

After a few hours in the car, even the best road trips start feeling a little uncomfortable. A travel pillow can be a lifesaver for naps, especially if you have passengers taking turns driving. I, personally, am one to thug it out and just use the door as my pillow but, I wouldn’t recommend, neck pain is guaranteed. If you tend to get cold during the ride, it’s also helpful to bring a blanket or sweatshirt.

Entertainment

Road trips can be long and trust me—there’s only so much of dad’s podcast you can tolerate before you start losing your mind. Make a playlist, bring movie CDs, or download some audiobooks and podcasts ahead of time. If you’re traveling with friends or family, pack a deck of cards for rest stops or play road trip games like “Would You Rather” or “The License Plate Game.” And if you have kids, keeping them entertained is key—bring activity books, small toys, or a tablet loaded with their favorite movies.

Safety Essentials

Don’t forget to pack an emergency kit. A dead battery or flat tire can turn an adventure into a nightmare fast. Keep jumper cables, a flashlight, a first-aid kit, and a portable phone charger in your car. And if you’re driving in bad weather, and extra blanket and some waters are always good to have on hand.

Moving cross country is an adventure, but having the right essentials makes the experience so much better. With good snacks, solid entertainment, and a few comfort items, you’ll be ready for whatever the road throws at you. So pack smart, buckle up, and enjoy the ride to your new home.
