San Jose, CA Moving with Children
In San Jose, moving is one of the most stressful things you will do in your life. As an adult, you are looking forward to living in your new home, but on top of packing and getting ready for the move you have a million details to take care of. Add to all this needing to care for children who are, experiencing their own version of stress.
The key is to involve your kids as much as possible. Even the youngest child will experience disruption, and may be upset by the change in routine. Take the time to talk to them and explain exactly what is going on. If possible, drive to the new neighborhood in San Jose that you’re moving to and walk around. Point out the parks, libraries, their new school, pretty buildings and statues. Make them feel comfortable. If a physical visit is not possible, show them pictures of the new place. Google maps can be a terrific tool for showing your children their new home and neighborhood without going there. Make it a fun adventure!
If you are moving to a new country or out of state, involve your children in a fun research project. Visit the library and get books on the new location. Watch videos, or go online. Will there be snow on the ground, and have they ever seen snow? The idea is to put yourself in your their shoes as much as possible, and make them not only prepared and comforted, but excited, so their energy during the move will be fueled more by joy and anticipation, than dread and fear.

They are important in this process, and they can learn a lot by being given “adult” jobs. Even babysitting the younger ones will give them a sense of being part of the process, and praise them lavishly for helping the family.
Lastly, remember to breathe. Utilize friends or the Moving Company (if using) to help with packing if you are unable to get it all done. Remember, it’s okay to ask for help. Moving doesn’t have to be stressful.
